“It has always been subtle, now that I think about it I have always heard anti-immigration speech from I was a child.”

Growing up you always hear anti-immigration hate speech, whether it is people complaining about immigrants taking their jobs or negative things said about people’s culture. It has always been subtle, now that I think about it I have always heard anti-immigration speech from I was a child.

“It has not been easy but through hard work and family togetherness, they have made a better life for our generation.”

My grandfather traveled via boat from the Caribbean to England looking for work and a better life. Later he sent for my grandmother to also travel to England. It was always hard for them to maintain a comfortable living. They had to deal with racism, low paying jobs and adjusting to a new environment. In the 60s there was opportunities for people to immigrate to Canada to work on the railway. Off my grandfather went again and later brought over my grandmother and their children. Since then, over the years my grandparents have sponsored majority of my family to live in Canada. It has not been easy but through hard work and family togetherness, they have made a better life for our generation.

Since I was born here, Canada always felt like home.
