“Because she never had a Canadian level of education, she could not obtain anything other than a factory job.”
I have definitely witnessed anti-immigration hate speech. I was having a conversation about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s acceptance of Syrian immigrants with an acquaintance and not only were they against it, they said that Canadians should take care of sustaining the livelihood of their citizens as it would be counterproductive to embrace immigrants who could take jobs as well as housing away from those who are entitled to them (citizens).
My most of my family migrated to Canada from Jamaica. However, none experienced hardships to the same degree as my grandmother. Upon her arrival into Canada during the early 1980’s she was deprived of many opportunities to achieve any sense of social mobility. Because she never had a Canadian level of education, she could not obtain anything other than a factory job. She lived on the poverty line up until her death. When I am in Toronto and I see all of the multicultural shops filled with people of different ethnic backgrounds, I feel at home.
